WHAT IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Root Canal Therapy (RCT), also known as Endodontic Treatment, is a procedure used when tooth decay reaches the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth, causing inflammation.
To save the injured tooth from extraction, an Endodontist, commonly known as a Root Canal Specialist, performs this procedure. The process involves several steps:
- Removing the inflamed or diseased dental material.
- Disinfecting and cleaning the tooth.
- Filling and sealing the tooth with an inert substance.
- Restoring and placing a crown or cap.
This multi-step approach may require multiple sessions to complete.
Why Does One Undergo Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Therapy (RCT) is performed on a broken or infected tooth. The infection can result from a fractured or broken tooth, extensive decay, gum disease, or repeated dental treatments on the same tooth. Receiving Root Canal Treatment is crucial because:
- It prevents the infection from spreading and saves the tooth from extraction.
- RCT alleviates pain caused by inflammation.
Procedure For Root Canal
Step 1: The first step involves taking an X-ray to determine the extent and location of the infection. Local anesthesia is administered if necessary before beginning the treatment.
Step 2: The next step is Cavity Preparation. This involves removing all infected tooth material or previous filling material to gain access to the inner part of the tooth (pulp).
Step 3: This is followed by pulp canal disinfection and shaping. The infected pulp is completely removed, and the canals are shaped and cleaned thoroughly.
Step 4: The cleaned and disinfected canals are then filled and sealed with Gutta-Percha, an inert rubber-like filling material.
Step 5: The final step is restoration and crowning. A filling is used to reconstruct the crown section of the tooth, and then a cap or crown is cemented in place.
Single Sitting Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (RCT) is the standard procedure for eliminating infection from a damaged or decayed tooth without resorting to extraction. Typically, a toothache, ranging from mild to severe, signals the need for this treatment. If not addressed, the infection can worsen significantly, making it essential to consult a skilled dentist for effective treatment.
Traditionally, RCT involves multiple visits, requiring the patient to see the dentist two or three times based on the treatment plan. However, single-sitting root canal treatment is a groundbreaking advancement in dentistry, enabling patients to complete the entire procedure in just one visit.
Single sitting RCT Procedure
- X-ray Imaging: An x-ray of the affected tooth is taken to determine the extent of the infection.
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient has a painless experience.
- Access Creation: A cavity is drilled through the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canal.
- Infection Removal: All infected materials are removed to clear the access path.
- Cleaning: The pulp chamber and infected root canals are thoroughly cleaned using specialized instruments.
- Shaping and Filling: The canals are shaped and cleaned again before being filled with a filling material.
- Crown Placement: A crown is placed on the treated tooth to provide strength and prevent fractures.
Advantages of a Single Sitting RCT
- Time Efficiency: Patients only need one appointment, saving them from taking two or three days out of their busy schedules.
- Reduced Discomfort: The need for multiple injections of local anesthesia is eliminated, resulting in less discomfort.
- Lower Risk of Contamination: Fewer appointments reduce the chances of contamination.
- Convenience for Special Needs: This method is especially convenient for older adults and patients with physical disabilities.
- Cost-Effective: The cost of a single-sitting root canal treatment is the same as, or sometimes even less than, that of a multiple-sitting RCT.
After the Treatment
Patients can usually resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure. It’s common to experience mild sensitivity in the treated area, which typically subsides within a few days.
In the long run, patients enjoy a positive, comfortable, and pain-free experience following the procedure.
Single-sitting root canal treatment is a highly advanced technique that offers fast relief from dental issues. It provides a convenient treatment option without compromising efficacy. However, it is essential to choose the right clinic in your city for accurate treatment and proper aftercare support.
